Software Engineer (Clojure)

Rokt is hiring thoughtful, talented functional programmers to expand our Clojure team in Sydney.

You'd be joining the team responsible for Rokt's "Data & Integrations Platform", which uses Clojure to do the data-munging we need to connect to a variety of advertisers' and ecommerce partners' CRMs. As Rokt grows, our engineering systems are growing and maturing with the company. You'll be part of a team committed to building systems that are solid enough to keep up with our impressive business growth, and flexible enough to adapt quickly and effectively to new and changing business opportunities.

The Data & Integrations team is a small group within our engineering team, focussed on a server-side system (ie Clojure on the JVM) to perform discrete data-processing tasks such as soft-real-time API integrations with third-party systems, CSV generation, scheduled data exports, etc. We don't have a Hadoop-based neural net diligently organising our customer data into the world's most efficiently balanced red-black tree (good news: we won't ask you to write one in an interview!) — instead, we try to spend our time carefully building the simplest thing that will do what the business needs done.

We're looking for programmers who can help us build simple, robust systems — and we think that means writing in a very functional style — whether that involves hooking some CV-enhancing buzzword technology on the side or not.

If you have professional Clojure experience, that's excellent. What we're really looking for, though, is developers comfortable with a simple, functional style of writing code — we'll happily bring you up to speed on Clojure if you're not there already. If you have a Java background and you're looking to move in a more FP direction, we'd love to talk to you. If you're a Lisper or have a background in another FP language, we'd love to talk to you.

Please note: unfortunately, at this stage, we're only able to consider candidates who already have the legal right to work in Australia for this role — due to Australian immigration rules, it's difficult for us to sponsor candidates for a position such as this one.

Requirements

We are happy to consider engineers at any level. The following proficiencies are of particular interest, and you would help your application if you have relevant experience or interest you can point to in:

• Functional programming — if not Clojure, some experience with other functional programming languages (such as Haskell, Scala, other Lisps, etc), or functional techniques in other languages (perhaps in Java, JavaScript, Python etc.)
• SQL — ability to go beyond a simple "SELECT * FROM Employee" is a plus; solid experience with data modelling is a definite advantage
• AWS — we try not to "cloud all the things!" unnecessarily, but our infrastructure is AWS-hosted, and if you're already familiar enough with the environment that you can use AWS resources effectively to simplify how you get the job done, we'll value that contribution
