Automotive Warranty Technical Advisor

TLDR

Review warranty and mechanical breakdown claims, deliver technical assessments to the claims team, and flag inflated or misaligned repairs.

OPTIOM INC.

Automotive Warranty Technical Advisor

Contractor

Remote/Flexible

The Engagement

We're looking for an experienced mechanic, service technician, or service advisor who knows how warranty products work and isn't afraid to challenge a repair facility when a claim doesn't add up.

This is a contract consulting role — not a job in a shop. You'd be reviewing warranty and mechanical breakdown claim files, providing technical assessments to our claims team, and working directly with dealerships and repair facilities when we need to push back on a repair that isn't covered. Your mechanical knowledge is what we're buying. You don't need insurance experience; we have that covered.

Work is ad hoc and primarily remote — you'd review claim files digitally on a flexible schedule. We're offering a $30,000 annual minimum guarantee so you have income certainty, with additional hourly billing as volume grows.

What You'd Be Doing

  • Review work orders, diagnostic reports, and repair estimates for warranty and mechanical breakdown claims — assess whether the diagnosis, parts, and labour are consistent with what's covered.
  • Identify when a repair is inflated, unnecessary, or not aligned with the reported failure — and document your technical reasoning clearly.
  • Engage directly with dealership service departments and independent repair facilities to request clarification or challenge claims that don't hold up.
  • Work alongside our Claims team to explain your findings in plain language and support determination decisions.
  • Help our team build their working knowledge of mechanical breakdown over time — what normal looks like, what raises flags, and when to ask more questions.

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Active or retired automotive service technician, journeyperson mechanic, or comparable automotive trade experience — you've worked in a shop and you know how vehicles fail and how repairs get priced.
  • Direct experience with warranty products in a service environment — OEM manufacturer warranty, dealer extended warranty, or aftermarket programs. You've submitted, reviewed, or disputed warranty claims and you understand how the system works.
  • Ability to review a work order critically — you can spot inflated estimates, unnecessary parts, and repairs that don't match the failure.
  • Professional, direct communication style — comfortable holding your position when a service advisor or technician pushes back.

Preferred:

  • Journeyperson automotive service technician certification (Red Seal or provincial equivalent).
  • Prior experience in a warranty claims review, dealer warranty administration, or technical advisory capacity.
  • Exposure to multiple vehicle makes and a broad range of mechanical systems.
  • Comfortable working independently on a flexible schedule with remote file review.

Engagement Terms

  • Independent contract engagement — not employment.
  • Annual minimum guarantee of $30,000, billed against a negotiated hourly rate over 12 calendar months.
  • Hourly rate negotiated based on experience and warranty expertise
  • Work is ad hoc — no minimum hours commitment. Volume scales with Optiom's warranty claims intake.
  • Primarily remote — digital claim file review. Occasional on-site collaboration in Calgary when warranted.
  • No insurance licensing required.
