Backend Engineer (Remote Opportunity)

We are currently looking for a Backend Engineer for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. This role will focus on designing, developing, and maintaining secure, scalable backend services, RESTful APIs, and enterprise integration solutions using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, SQL, and modern cloud and CI/CD practices.

The engineer will work closely with architects, frontend developers, QA engineers, DevSecOps teams, and product stakeholders within an Agile delivery environment, supporting sprint, increment, and release priorities across mission-critical healthcare applications.

The candidate must reside within the continental US.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend services, RESTful APIs, and enterprise integration components supporting shared services and mission-critical healthcare applications.
• Implement business logic, service orchestration, data access layers, and secure service-to-service communication to support application functionality and data exchange requirements.
• Build scalable, maintainable, and secure server-side solutions using approved architectures, development standards, and secure coding practices.
• Collaborate with frontend developers, architects, QA engineers, DevSecOps teams, and product stakeholders to support end-to-end solution delivery.
• Participate in technical design, estimation, code reviews, troubleshooting, defect resolution, release activities, and production support.
• Optimize backend service performance, reliability, error handling, monitoring, logging, and observability across application environments.
• Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience, with a minimum of 5 years of backend software engineering or enterprise application development experience.
• Strong hands-on experience developing backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, RESTful services, and API development principles.
• Experience with SQL, relational databases, data access layers, and backend data processing patterns.
• Experience with enterprise integration patterns, authentication methods, secure service-to-service communication, Git-based version control, and CI/CD workflows.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, analytical, and code quality skills, with an understanding of secure coding and enterprise software development best practices.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, QA, DevSecOps, architecture, and product teams within Agile delivery environments.

Additional Qualifications

• Experience with healthcare integrations, FHIR APIs, enterprise messaging standards, healthcare interoperability workflows, or InterSystems IRIS is preferred.
• Familiarity with AWS cloud services, container platforms, deployment automation, and modern observability technologies is desirable.
• Experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other federal government technology programs, along with relevant cloud, Agile, or software development certifications, is a plus.

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• All selected candidates must successfully complete a background check.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including required fingerprinting, when required for the position.
