Director, Editor in Chief

We’re hiring ​an Editor in Chief to lead editorial for our News & Storytelling team. We’re looking for someone to set the editorial direction and tone, manage a team of writers and content creators, and develop and deliver storytelling in support of the company’s products, impact, community and brand. This position will report to the VP of Consumer and Technology Communications and will work closely with the product, marketing and policy teams.  

You’ll be responsible for building and leading a new team within Lyft Communications that will help tell the story of Lyft’s vision and impact. You’ll help build the team, establish the channels and set the editorial direction for the team. You’ll develop owned content, establish partnerships, and deliver digital campaigns. You’ll work closely with leaders in other functions and with others on the Communications team, establishing yourself as a trusted advisor to key partners. 

We’re looking for a creative self-starter who is curious, engaged around emerging trends and cultural moments and thrives with tight deadlines. You’ll be adept at finding the most interesting news hook for every story and managing multiple people, stories and projects simultaneously. We’re looking for an excellent communicator, curious listener, and persuasive presenter. We’re looking for an experienced writer, manager and editor who loves complex and cross functional communication projects. You’ll have a passion for using data to inform your work, and you’ll have a strong record of working collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overall team leadership, editorial direction of all content, and the development of new digital channels 
  • Responsible for planning and running a robust editorial and content calendar with a steady drumbeat of engaging articles.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining a network of contributors; commissioning, editing and handling internal approvals.
  • Responsible for overall team budget, resources and processes.
  • Partner with leaders of each of our lines of business and with other central teams - to surface compelling and strategically useful stories

Experience:

  • 12+ years of journalism experience; digital-first journalism experience is helpful. 
  • Experience covering technology products and services is helpful. 
  • 5+ Experience working in a technology company content team.
  • Experience managing large teams of staff, agencies, and contractors.
  • Proven track record of building a team from the ground up.
  • Strong experience surfacing stories; particularly through data, product launches and community outreach.
  • Proven track record using digital measurement to inform content.
  • Experience with high-profile consumer campaigns and/or product launches. 
  • Proven experience as a trusted communications advisor to business partners and leaders. 
  • Agency and in-house experience.
