Firmware & Device QA Engineer
TLDR
Validate firmware and hardware–software integration for IoT readers, sensors, and gateways through hands-on testing, tooling, and rigorous QA.
About the role:
The QA Engineer (Firmware / Device) is responsible for validating the firmware and hardware-software integration of Safetrust's readers, sensors, and gateways. This position plays a key role in the QA organization, ensuring devices behave correctly across BLE, Wi-Fi, NFC, secure boot, OTA updates, and the full credential-presentation flow.
This role focuses on hands-on device testing, tooling, and defect triage, and contributes to Safetrust's continued growth by ensuring firmware releases are reliable in real environments before they reach customers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, execute, and maintain comprehensive test plans, test cases, and validation procedures for embedded firmware and connected devices.
- Perform functional, integration, regression, system, interoperability, end-to-end, performance, stress, endurance, and environmental testing across Safetrust's embedded product portfolio.
- Validate firmware functionality across BLE, Wi-Fi, NFC, Ethernet, USB, wired, and other communication interfaces under normal and adverse operating conditions, including edge cases such as low signal strength, interference, and power loss.
- Verify secure boot, OTA firmware updates, factory provisioning, credential management, encryption, and recovery mechanisms.
- Develop automated test scripts, frameworks, and small tooling using Python, Shell, or other scripting languages to improve regression coverage, testing efficiency, and log analysis.
- Design, build, maintain, and continuously improve hardware test labs, fixtures, automation rigs, racks, instrumentation, and validation environments.
- Investigate firmware defects and customer-reported field issues by collecting logs, reproducing issues, analyzing root causes, and partnering with engineering teams to resolve problems.
- Track and document defects with detailed reproduction steps, logs, risk assessments, impact assessments, and recommended corrective actions in the bug-tracking system.
- Participate in design reviews, requirements reviews, and release readiness activities to ensure quality is built into products early.
- Collaborate with Firmware, Embedded Linux, Hardware, AI, Mobile, Cloud, and Product teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain regression test suites supporting continuous integration, continuous delivery pipelines, and release sign-off criteria.
- Monitor quality metrics including defect leakage, regression coverage, release readiness, and production quality trends.
- Support manufacturing validation, production testing, and investigation of customer-reported field issues.
- Continuously improve QA methodologies, automation coverage, and testing standards across Safetrust's engineering organization.
Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of QA experience, ideally on hardware/firmware or IoT products (Junior: 1–2; Middle: 2–3+).
- Working knowledge of software QA methodologies, test planning, and bug-tracking tools (Jira or similar).
- Comfortable using lab equipment such as multimeters, logic analyzers, and serial console tools.
- Basic scripting in Python or shell for log parsing and test automation.
- Understanding of common protocols: BLE, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, USB, UART.
- Strong attention to detail, methodical approach, and good written English for clear bug reports.
Nice to Have / Preferred
- Experience with access-control, RFID/NFC, or IoT device testing.
- Exposure to test automation frameworks (pytest, Robot Framework).
- Familiarity with embedded debug tools (J-Link, ST-Link, oscilloscopes).
- ISTQB Foundation Level certification.
Success Profile:
The ideal candidate is:
- Methodical and detail-oriented when validating hardware/firmware behaviour.
- Hands-on and comfortable working directly with lab equipment and physical devices.
- A clear communicator who writes precise, reproducible bug reports.
- Able to triage and troubleshoot issues independently before escalating.
- Comfortable working across regions and functions in a global environment (Vietnam, US, Australia).
