Food Scientist

TLDR

Design and implement food safety, shelf-life, and nutritional tests within controlled environment agriculture to improve packaging and processing of our leafy greens and crops.

Role – As a Food Scientist at Local Roots, you’ll be designing and implementing a range of food safety, shelf life, and nutritional tests, making significant improvements to our current food service and retail produce packages, and designing all aspects of our harvesting, processing, and storage procedures for all of our food crops. You will work together with the Research & Development team to optimize growing recipes to ensure that the food we grow and sell is always top quality. We are seeking a professional researcher with a true desire to innovate within Controlled Environmental Agriculture (CEA) and take ownership over projects that will change the world of agriculture.

Responsibilities – You should be confident making significant contributions in the following categories:

  • Developing food safety, risk management, and HACCP plans
  • Planning and conducting fundamental microbiology experiments and tests and shelf life studies of leafy greens, herbs, berries, and more
  • Procuring, testing, and redesigning clamshells, boxes, and liners for the storage and transportation of produce

Requirements – Your background should include the following:

  • 2+ years of professional indoor growing, processing, and storing experience (CEA/vertical farming preferred, but greenhouse sufficient)
  • Experience growing, processing, and storing leafy greens, herbs, berries, etc.
  • Graduate degree(s) in food science, molecular biology, and/or plant science

Bonus Skills – Bonus points if any of these also describe you:

  • 5+ years in CEA
  • Knowledge of basic process automation and control systems
  • Confidence in troubleshooting and problem solving complex systems
