General Manager- Legal and Business Affairs

Role Summary:

Sony Music is currently looking at experienced lawyer to join their in-house legal team to play a crucial legal role for their India operations. The candidate will be responsible for supporting the evolving needs of a fast-paced and high growth business, bringing pragmatic solutions, best practices and strategies for managing legal risks. The candidate needs to have initiative and drive and one who can effectively partner with business teams and handle a high variety of varied and complex legal work.

 

What you'll do:

  • The candidate would require to  focus primarily on documentation related to acquisition of  audio and audio-visual content for the company, which would include drafting, negotiating, reviewing/vetting, attending meetings and oversee the execution of wide spectrum of media and music agreements, artist, performer, author agreements  entailing  assignment,  licensing, distribution, recording, music publishing, branding, artist management, talent agreements, non-disclosure letters, no objection certificates, etc.
  • The candidate would require simplifying and structure existing contract templates or create new templates based on business requirements for acquisition and link documentation.
  • The candidate would require communicating regularly with key business stakeholders to help identify and address legal issues associated with copyright acquisition and its protection.
  • The candidate will be required to conduct & supervise legal due diligence with respect to catalogue acquisitions, highlight risks involved, find solutions, draft, review, negotiate and close catalogue acquisition agreements, and all documentation and agreements in this regard.
  • The candidate will be required to – i). enter data, ii).  Update on status and iii). Fill in excel reports, v). clear DRA in a timely manner, pertaining to Legal department.
  • The candidate will be required to update in a timely manner, rights entries and rights clearances vide emails or via existing systems in the Company.
  • The candidate will be required to work with a team for a smooth and timely delivery on the deals.
  • Copyright and trademark registration: Supervise copyright and trademark registration process and in this regard co-ordinate internally within the Company with the concerned department and external law firms appointed in this regard.
  • Candidate must have the following experience amongst others, in litigation:
    i. Drafting and responding to Legal Notices.
    ii. Briefing external law firms on any dispute, planning and strategizing the course of action.
    iii. Finaliizing plaints, suits etc. 
    iv. Attending legal proceedings and represent the Company as a witness in such proceedings.
    v. Timely update to senior management on developments. 
    vi. Update sheets related to litigation.

 

Who you are:

  • Previous Experience: The candidate must have a previous work experience of 12-15 years. Experience could cover law firm experience or experience in in-house legal positions. Experience from media and entertainment industry are preferred. 
  • Education: LLB. Admitted to practice in India
  • Skills:
    Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
    The ability to Analyse complex legal problems quickly and concisely.
    Exceptionally strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to tailor communication styles to diverse audiences. 
    Thorough knowledge of intellectual property, entertainment and media laws.
    Respond with a sense of urgency and deal with confidential information.
    Meet agreed timelines.
    Enthusiastic and should be taking initiatives, Organized.
    Solution-oriented approach to problems.
    Cooperate with team members and various product managers.
    Communication effectiveness.
