Medical Student Rotation

SPACE OPERATIONS MEDICAL STUDENT - TEMPORARY

SpaceX is currently building the world's next human spaceflight capability. We’re actively supporting a wide array of mission types - revolutionizing access to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with cargo and crewed Dragon missions, returning humans to the Moon by developing a Human Lander System (HLS) for NASA’s Artemis program, and rapidly developing Starship,  the first rocket and spacecraft designed to support crewed trips to Mars. As a medical student at SpaceX, you’ll assist in clinical care, public health promotion, and clinical research at SpaceX. You’ll work under the supervision of SpaceX flight surgeons and fellows and assist with their responsibilities including working collaboratively with NASA and other customers. SpaceX is seeking excellent, team-oriented medical students who have a passion and interest in human spaceflight.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Take ownership of a research or quality improvement project with a discrete result
• Assist with SpaceX’s COVID response to keep employees and crewmembers safe while keeping operations running
• Collaborate with academic institutions and/or private organizations on medical research projects
• Complete didactic education in Aerospace Medicine laid out in SpaceX curriculum
• Create a mini-lecture each week on a clinical case and present to your team.
• Assist flight surgeons and medical fellows in research projects, data synthesis, and implementation of deliverables for Starship and Crew Dragon
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to accomplish goals involving human spaceflight, public health, and occupational medicine involving SpaceX employees
• Participate in occupational health surveillance and public health improvement projects for various SpaceX sites.
• Uphold professionalism and code-of-conduct as a student at SpaceX. Be an ambassador for your home medical school and SpaceX

POSITION DETAILS:

• LENGTH OF POSITION: 1 month minimum; specific month assignment will be negotiated during placement process
• LOCATION: Hawthorne, CA; Boca Chica, TX; Cape Canaveral, FL
• APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 5, 2021
• There is not a stipend for this student rotation; SpaceX will assist with any costs associate with travel between SpaceX locations during the course of the student rotation but all housing, food, stipend, etc. are at the discretion of the student's home academic institution

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a enrolled in medical school

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Experience with inferential and descriptive statistics, statistical computing, data visualization software/tools, SQL, and Excel
• Interest in Public Health and Preventative Medicine.
• Interest in working with interdisciplinary teams to solve complex problems
• Able to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as technical writing proficiency

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
• Some travel to other SpaceX sites, specifically Hawthorne, CA, Cape Canaveral, FL and Boca Chica, TX, may be required
