We’re growing our team with our new Halifax-based second headquarters. We will work out of the Volta Innovation Hub, located in Halifax’s Innovation District. Wattpad’s current HQ is based in Toronto, with global teams in the UK, Los Angeles, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Jakarta, and Manila.
We are looking for a Platform Engineer to join our first Halifax team. You will be supported by a Halifax-based Engineering Manager and be part of a distributed team between our two headquarters.
Our business is fast-paced, dynamic, and evolves quickly, so you are an experienced Platform Engineer who is versatile and adaptable, with a passion for building products that people love. You’ll be an integral part of not only implementing solutions to those challenges but designing them as well. This is a high impact role - you’ll be developing code for Wattpad’s large distributed system that handles 40k requests every second.

What you'll be doing:
- Designing, building, and maintaining a large scale distributed system serving millions of people per day
- Doing iterative development on our microservices in Go and our monolith in PHP
- Improving reliability and performance of core components
- Implementing A/B tests and other experiments
- Writing unit and service tests for all your code
- Achieving excellence iteratively by deploying many times per day
- Helping create the culture and community of Wattpad in Halifax, as an early employee
- Potential travel to Toronto HQ as needed
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum 3 years of experience working on distributed systems at scale
- You develop scalable, robust, and maintainable code and have a desire to contribute to the broader software engineering community
- You’re skilled in Go or PHP, or are eager and able to learn Go and PHP
- You have experience working with SQL and/or no-SQL databases
- Strong user empathy
- A desire to grow and learn continuously
