DEVELOPMENT & ENGINEERING (D&E) DEPARTMENT

The Development & Engineering (D&E) team drives the technology, innovation and new development of data center infrastructure across Vantage’s companywide portfolio. Innovation Engineering (IE) is at the core of the Development and Engineering department and is responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating design standards, equipment specifications, engineering guidelines and tools and templates to facilitate the regional design and execution teams in meeting three key company goals – product standardization, rapid deployment and meeting cost metrics set forth by the company.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Vantage is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to be part of the Innovation Engineering team that leads the standardization of products across Vantage’s companywide portfolio. In this role, you will be responsible for assistance in developing and promoting the standards for mechanical systems design. Regular collaboration and coordination will be required with architects, other engineering fields, procurement, and facility operations team. You will work with the regional design and execution teams to ensure that the existing standards are implemented and coordinate any enhancements required to be incorporated into the standard design and specifications.

You will assist in the review and approval of new design concepts and products and incorporate any changes into the design while ensuring they follow the specifications and customer requirements.

Knowledge of all aspects of mechanical engineering is required, including built-up mechanical rooms, packaged equipment, chilled water equipment and piping, DX systems, central utility plants, airside and water-side economization, humidity control, raised access floor plenums, and value engineering as they relate to designing innovative datacenters. Knowledge in the areas of plumbing and fire protection design for data centers is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Participate in all aspects of program level mechanical design and engineering. Create and update OPR and basis of design
• Drive project level tasks and milestones assigned by the Innovation team lead
• Lead regular revision cycles to update Vantage’s design standards, specifications, and guidelines
• Operate as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for technical reviews including new OFCI equipment submittals, and program level engineering studies/analyses
• Interface with design consultants and oversee completion of program level initiatives
• Visit manufacturing plants for Factory Witness Testing (FWT) of critical equipment

DUTIES

• Participate in new product development process from inception to implementation and apply for and obtain patents for the company to retain its IP
• Research and evaluate new vendors and products with a goal to achieve operational improvement, reduce project cost and improve project schedule
• Review and approve OFCI equipment submittals to ensure they align with company specifications and coordinate the details with other teams
• Coordinate with regional design execution teams to understand OPR deviations and lessons learnt on projects
• Conduct analysis to determine if the OPR deviations and/or lessons learnt from site-adapt projects can be applied to improve Vantage standards and specifications
• Participate in creating and standardizing mechanical sequence of operations (SOOs) in coordination with internal automation teams
• Conduct value engineering analyses, and provide system recommendations based on return on investment and IRR analysis
• Identify and create tools and templates that will add new value to the products delivered to our internal and external customers
• Standardize documentation for commissioning of mechanical systems for global application
• Work closely with Operations to find a balance between cost-effective solutions & operational sustainability
• Work on optimizing design to meet Sustainability targets set forth by the company
• Support in evaluating M&A opportunities
• Use engineering analysis programs and professional judgment to analyze the following:
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies and Rack Layout Optimization
• Psychrometric chart evaluation, ASHRAE extreme annual design day temperatures and relative impact to supply air temperatures
• Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) calculations & Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE)
• Additional duties as assigned from time to time by management

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited university or college
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred
• 7 years of experience in mechanical systems design and construction required. 8-12 years preferred
• Data Center and/or Mission Critical experience is required
• Experience with NA or EU construction markets required
• Proficient in AutoCAD, Excel, and Word and CFD modeling software environments with Revit, BIM, Navisworks
• Working knowledge of critical cooling infrastructure within a data center
• Well versed with all building codes and ordinances, including ASHRAE
• Plumbing and fire protection infrastructure background within a data center preferred
• National and international travel required and is expected to be 10 to 15%, but may increase over time as the business evolves
