Principal Product Controls Engineer
TLDR
Own controls architecture across product lines, unify industrial protocols, and ensure new generations interoperate with installed Control Panel and ON Box systems.
ON.energy is building the backbone of energy and AI infrastructure powering grid-safe data centers and mission-critical facilities. The company supplies and operates hyperscale power systems that solve the toughest resilience challenges, delivering custom solutions for AI data centers, mission-critical facilities, and front-of-the-meter assets. ON recently announced a 5GW partnership, with 3GW currently under construction across multiple hyperscale data center campuses. With patented technology and proprietary software, ON.energy develops projects worldwide that set new benchmarks for resilience.
We are seeking a Principal Controls Engineer to serve as the final technical authority across ON.energy's controls product lines. Working alongside product management, hardware, software, and field teams, this role brings those products together into one coherent control system, keeps each new generation compatible with the installed base, and leads the final technical review before a design is released. This is a product-focused, senior individual contributor role: you will set architecture, lead complex design work, develop engineering standards, and drive product decisions. Ideal candidates bring deep expertise in industrial control systems, network architecture, and OT/IT integration, with preferred experience in mission-critical or utility-scale applications.
What You'll Do
Own the control architecture across the Control Panels portfolio, including controls hardware, network topology, and HMI, working with OT on the final EMS platform. Agree with the product and engineering leads on the shared data model, tag and alarm conventions, and communication stack that unify these products into one integration framework across ON.energy product lines.
Lead design of control panels, SCADA integration layers, and communication networks supporting the AI UPS product.
Develop engineering standards, design guides, and review processes for controls product development.
Compile and validate product technical information packages.
Integrate and guide the technical implementation of Modbus, DNP3, OPC-UA, and other industrial protocols.
Provide expert input during product program phases: concept, design, and launch.
Keep the cross-product interoperability matrix and version-support policy current with the product owners, so that new products remain compatible with legacy Control Panel and ON Box installations, and define the firmware and protocol migration path when they cannot.
Lead the control design for the AI UPS product line, including sequence of operation, transfer and transition logic, and the interfaces to EMS, HMI, and site.
Define control-function verification with the test and commissioning teams, and sign it off at the product level: sequence-of-operation testing, failure-mode and loss-of-comms behavior, and FAT and SAT protocols.
Serve as the final technical review for controls deliverables, working through open items with the design teams to reach a clear pass, hold, or rework decision before release or shipment.
Lead platform selection for the controls portfolio (controller, I/O, HMI runtime, network, and comms stack), building the lifecycle, obsolescence, second-source, licensing, and unit-cost case with supply chain and the product teams so that each decision is one the group can stand behind.
Help mentor senior and mid-level controls engineers.
Participate in hardware workshops and cross-functional forums.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Controls, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering.
- 12+ years of controls engineering experience in industrial or project-based settings.
- Expert-level knowledge of TCP/IP, VLANs, VPNs, BGP, OSPF, and OT network protocols.
- Deep familiarity with control systems, SCADA, EMS, and safety systems.
- Proven track record of network and controls deployments at project scale.
- Experience owning control architecture across multiple products in one portfolio, with evidence that the products stayed coherent as the portfolio grew.
- Demonstrated experience shipping a new product generation that had to interoperate with an installed base, including the migration path for existing sites.
- Has held named technical sign-off authority at a design or release gate.
- Ability to produce and review network diagrams and control architecture drawings.
- Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willing to travel up to 20% for FAT inspections and commissioning.
Preferred Plus
- Certifications: ISA CAP/CCST, Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, or similar.
- Experience with BESS, data center, or utility-scale controls environments.
- Background in cybersecurity for OT/ICS systems.
