A General Counsel, also known as In-house Counsel or Chief Legal Officer, is the chief lawyer of a legal department, usually within a company or a governmental department. This person provides advice on legal matters, drafts and interprets contracts and legal documents, and represents the corporation in legal proceedings. In a startup context, their role might extend beyond the traditional legal sphere to encompass roles in business planning and strategy, risk management, and governance.
