Marshmallow HQ started in the basement of a gym and swiftly moved to our homes during lockdown. We know great products can be built from anywhere. So, this role comes with the option of being fully remote!

Marshmallow’s Android app

Our Android app at Marshmallow is 100% Kotlin with a Model View ViewModel architecture. Code is organised into pure Kotlin and Android library modules, to keep the codebase maintainable and scalable.

We use coroutines as a concurrency design pattern, Retrofit and Moshi for network calls and Dagger for dependency injection. We use Lint, Ktlint, Detekt as static code analysis tools.

We are min SDK 23 and extensively use Jetpack libraries, we are excited to use Jetpack Compose in future!

Bitrise is our continuous Integration and delivery tool and we use Github pull requests as a code review tool. We write unit tests for ViewModels, Repositories and any other piece of logic in the app and Espresso tests for Fragments and UI.

What you'll be doing

You’ll join one of our product teams working alongside other engineers, designers and product managers shaping the product roadmap and building new features to improve the experience for our customers.

Your product focus will ultimately depend on the team you join, but here are just a few of the exciting opportunities we believe the app can play a huge role in:

• Vastly improve our customer experience, reducing friction and helping people in their moments of need with an instant and delightful experience
• Revolutionising the way claims are handled in an antiquated industry which hasn’t kept up with technological advancement
• Assisting us in fraud detection & prevention, which will help us to lower prices and make insurance more affordable for our legitimate customers

Who you are

We’re looking for Android engineers who have a real passion for building great products, so please get in touch if the following sounds like you:

• You have a desire for creating clean, testable code

• You have an outcome oriented mindset and care about the “why” behind what you are building

• You are curious and have a can-do attitude

• You’ve shipped and/or iterated on at least one app on the Play Store

Our process

We break it up into 5 stages:

• Initial call with George Regan our Tech Talent Acquisition Specialist (45 mins)
• A skill-based interview where you will discuss your previous experience with one of our Engineering Managers (1 hour)
• Tech assessment (7 days, sent via Code Screen)
• A technical interview with Daniele Bottillo our Senior Android Engineer and Ben Gilroy our Senior iOS Engineer (1 hour 15 mins)
• A culture interview with David Goate our CTO to check that your work style fits our processes and values (1 hour)
• We’ll let you know if you’re invited to an interview or not. But, as a small team with a lot of applications to consider, we can’t give individual feedback on each application

Background checks

To meet our regulatory obligations as an FCA-authorised financial services company, we need to do some background checks on all new hires. That means carrying out a DBS check and making sure you don't have any live criminal proceedings. Feel free to ask our Talent Acquisition team if you have any questions about this!
