Senior Product Engineer (Freelance)

TLDR

Solve customer experience challenges across Kids and Keepsake journeys using Astro, Next, TypeScript, and AI tools to drive growth.

3-4 days per week, hybrid work policy in central London office

We're looking for a freelance product engineer to join us between June and October 2026, working primarily on wonderbly.com with a focus on driving growth into Q4.

This is a hands-on role. The work involves close collaboration with the VP product and other teams to solve deep customer experience challenges around our Kids and Keepsake landing pages and journeys, in order to unlock growth in these key areas for the business.

You'll be working within a small, focused team — and at least some of the time, with a fair amount of autonomy. We're not looking for someone to execute a perfect brief. We're looking for someone with the judgment to help us figure out the right thing to build, and then build it well.

A few things that are important to us

The work you're doing feeds directly into beautifully made, deeply personal books that people treasure. People’s perception of quality has to be high on first contact with our website.

We're an AI-first engineering team and want someone who brings that same orientation: using AI tools thoughtfully to move faster and have greater impact by tackling harder problems.

We also believe the best collaboration happens in person. We'd love you in our Bloomsbury studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. It's a lovely place to work.

The initial contract is three months, but we expect it to grow as the work and our working relationship develops . We'll agree a competitive day rate based on your experience.

Requirements

This role suits someone who is

  • Comfortable working across domains as it involves working closely with our creatives, product, and trading/marketing squads
  • Someone that can rapidly get up to speed with our tech stack and has strong experience in other areas: backend, ecommerce, UX
  • Confident and empathetic in their approach
  • Obsessed with quality because we are the premium personalised book brand in the space
  • Agentic in their approach to everything as we are an AI first engineering team and we are transforming our processes to match. We are still learning, hopefully from you, and want to work together to create enduring solutions

Our tech stack

  • Astro as our headless e-commerce storefront app
  • Next for our custom personalisation capture “canvas” app
  • Typescript everywhere
  • Deployed on Heroku (migrating to Render)
  • Prismic CMS and custom ecommerce backend
  • Good DX (could you make it better?)

Benefits

Remote-Friendly

We'd love you in our Bloomsbury studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week.

Wonderbly is a unique, award winning start-up that lives on the intersection of storytelling, engineering, digital and print. We create uncompromisingly high-quality personalised books to inspire courage, curiosity and kindness in children all over the world. We truly believe that imaginatively personalised stories are one of the greatest ways to make a child feel loved, unique and capable of anything. To show them that any story they imagine could be their story. We’ve spent the past six years obsessing about all aspects of personalisation in design and storytelling, optimising our rendering engine and scaling our Print on Demand network to four continents. We recently started an exciting shift from personalised books for children, to a global Personal Publishing leader. While we continue to publish the world's most innovative personalised books for kids, we started to think about the power of meaningful personalisation beyond the children market. Recently we announced the launch of Wonderbly Studios: a strategic partnerships (B2B2C and joint ventures) platform offering access to Wonderbly’s world-leading personalisation expertise across design, tech and manufacturing. We could not ask for a better suited partner than the Wizarding World - the official Harry Potter digital hub and fan club. Powered by Wonderbly Studios' design, tech and operations,The Keys and Curios journal (a welcome gift for Wizarding World Gold members) is a real creative triumph. Our CultureOur culture, or vibes as we call it here at Wonderbly is built on three core values that are at the heart of the Lost My Name book which started it all. We have extended the idea that "with a little bit of courage, curiosity and kindness anything is possible (including finding your lost name) to all aspects of our work. Be Courageous - building a new business, pushing all kinds of creative, operational and technical envelopes every day, going places no one has been before - these tasks are not for the fainthearted. We value taking (calculated) risks, rising to the constant challenges startup life present to us, making bold decisions. The people having the greatest success here are self-starters who thrive on autonomy and consciously work towards great leaps of personal growth. We like to help our employees realise they are even braver than they think. Be Curious - we pride ourselves on being an organisation that is obsessed with learning. Our curiosity and childlike sense of wonder is one of the most amazing attributes we have as human beings – it’s what weds us to the world. Curiosity is the spark that helps us learn and grow. It also makes an obvious business case - it goes hand in hand with being inventive, ingenious, with learning new skills, with taking risks, with breaking new grounds.Be Kind - at Wonderbly there's one rule above all: no assholes in the building. In order for people to be kind, they have to pay attention to what is happening around us. Kindness at Wonderbly manifests itself externally - how we treat and empathise with our customers, and internally - how we treat each other. We want to design a company culture that’s not just looking at how we can make the world better for ourselves, but how we can make it better for others as well.Benefits, perks and stuff Each year you'll accrue a generous 28 days holiday, plus 8 bank holidays We support being active; with numerous running groups, gym lunches and yoga in the office.
