TLDR
Develop autonomy and motion control for outdoor mobile robots and magnetic crawlers operating in marine environments.
iKnowHow Group is a dynamic, international technology company with 24+ years of experience and a team of 300+ talented professionals delivering innovative technology solutions across Energy, Telecommunications, Banking & Financial Services, and the Public Sector.
Aperion Robotics, part of IKH Group, focuses on the development and commercialization of advanced robotic systems designed to operate reliably in demanding real-world environments.
We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Robotics Engineer to join our growing Robotics team and take technical ownership of key autonomy, navigation and system integration activities across our robotic platforms.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop and maintain robotics software using C++ and Python within ROS/ROS 2 environments.
- Develop and improve localization and state-estimation pipelines using data from GNSS/RTK, IMUs, wheel odometry, LiDAR and other onboard sensors.
- Design and improve autonomous navigation capabilities, including global path planning, local motion control, obstacle avoidance and recovery behaviors.
- Develop autonomy and motion-control functionality for outdoor mobile robots and magnetic crawlers operating in marine environments.
- Improve robot behavior in challenging operational conditions, including degraded GNSS reception, sensor noise, wheel slippage, limited connectivity and partially observable environments.
- Design robust mission-execution and fault-handling mechanisms that allow robots to operate reliably for extended periods.
- Analyze field data, logs, sensor recordings and performance metrics to identify failures and improve system reliability.
- Participate in robot commissioning, sensor calibration, hardware bring-up and field validation.
- Integrate robotics software with embedded controllers, sensors, actuators, backend services and operator-facing applications.
- Design modular, maintainable and testable software architectures for production robotic systems.
- Translate product and operational requirements into technical specifications, implementation tasks and validation procedures.
- Conduct code reviews and contribute to software quality, development practices and technical documentation.
- Mentor Junior and Associate Robotics Engineers and support their technical development.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, embedded, backend and frontend engineers, as well as product and field-operation teams.
- Participate in technical discussions with customers and stakeholders when required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- At least 4 years of professional experience in robotics, autonomous systems or a closely related software-engineering field.
- Strong software-development experience in modern C++/Python as well as strong hands-on experience with ROS 1/2.
- Solid understanding of mobile-robot localization and state estimation.
- Experience integrating multiple sensors such as IMUs, wheel encoders, GNSS/RTK receivers, LiDARs, depth cameras or other perception sensors.
- Good understanding of sensor fusion concepts, coordinate frames, transformations, uncertainty and covariance.
- Experience with autonomous-navigation systems, including path planning, local control and obstacle avoidance.
- Good understanding of mobile-robot kinematics and motion control.
- Strong knowledge of Linux-based robotic systems.
- Experience with Git and collaborative software-development workflows.
- Experience debugging complex software and system-integration issues on physical robots.
- Ability to analyse logs and field data and systematically identify the root cause of failures.
- Professional working proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
- Willingness to participate in occasional field testing and commissioning activities in Greece or abroad.
Nice to have:
- Experience with EKF/UKF-based state estimation, LiDAR odometry, visual odometry or SLAM.
- Experience with GNSS/RTK-based outdoor navigation and navigation in GNSS-degraded environments.
- Experience with navigation frameworks such as Nav2, Move Base Flex or equivalent custom navigation stacks.
- Familiarity with real-time systems, CAN bus, serial communication, motor controllers and embedded interfaces.
- Experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing for robotics software.
- Experience with robotics simulation environments such as Gazebo, Ignition, Webots or Isaac Sim.
- Previous technical-leadership or mentoring experience.
