Software Developer

TLDR

Design, build, and run high-volume microservices for S3 Passenger with 24/7 availability.

Software Developer

We are looking for someone who is passionate about software development!

Full-time

As a Software Developer at Sqills, you'll design, build and run the microservices behind S3 Passenger, the reservation platform that operators like Eurostar, SNCF and VIA Rail Canada run their business on.

That means thousands of bookings per minute, 24/7, with no room for downtime, and the concurrency, performance and availability challenges that come with it.

The domain combines high volumes with high reliability expectations. You will be solving hard engineering problems at scale. That makes it genuinely complex, and sets a high bar for quality and efficiency. It also means the work keeps moving. There is always a new component to build, a new technique a team wants to try, or a domain you can grow into as the product evolves. If you are looking for an outlet, you will find one here.

The languages vary from team to team. Across our backend we use Java, Kotlin, Golang and Rust. We work in JetBrains IDEs like IntelliJ or VSCode, run our CI/CD pipelines through GitLab, run our applications on AWS, manage our infrastructure as code with Terraform, and orchestrate our containers with Kubernetes.

You get a lot of freedom in your own development environment, and AI is part of the toolkit: AI usage is encouraged and facilitated, and how teams use it is still evolving.

What will you do?

  • You'll join one of our Agile DevOps teams. Each team is fully responsible for part of S3 Passenger, from booking and inventory to ticketing, along with every microservice behind it.

  • You help develop and maintain S3 Passenger microservices.

  • Quality is your default: automated tests, peer code reviews and secure-by-design development are how you work.

  • You run what you build: you ship through our CI/CD pipelines and keep your services healthy in production, supported by monitoring tooling from our in-house platform team, and everyone takes a turn in the on-call rotation.

  • You deliver end to end with your team (product owner, developers and testers), from first idea to production.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a technical field

  • Experience with Java, Kotlin, Golang or Rust;

  • Experience with microservices architectures;

  • You've built software that runs in production for real users, and you've worked with CI/CD pipelines;

  • You ask why before you build, work independently, and enjoy sharing what you learn with your team;

  • Professional working proficiency in English.

Why work at Sqills?

  • Join an enthusiastic, diverse, and agile team of more than 240 colleagues worldwide;

  • Enjoy a flat structure environment with high responsibility and the ability to make an impact;

  • Work in an open, challenging environment with ambitious professionals from different backgrounds;

  • Take advantage of exciting travel and growth opportunities within Sqills and the larger Siemens Mobility organisation;

  • Participate in inspiring company outings with colleagues from North America, Europe, and beyond.

Curious?

We can only consider applications from Dutch, EU/EEA or Swiss citizens, or from individuals who already hold a valid residence and work permit for the Netherlands.

Sqills delivers the S3 Passenger SaaS platform, enhancing the public transport experience for rail operators around the globe. With a commitment to innovation, we're expanding our reach into new markets, including Asia Pacific and the Middle East, making transport more accessible and efficient.
