Software Engineer Apprentice (Hatch)

The Who, What, Why and Where

Hatch is a 6-month apprenticeship program at Twilio that aims to equip individuals having non-traditional technical backgrounds with industry experience in designing, developing and delivering production-ready software systems. We encourage anyone from an underrepresented group in tech to apply for this position. This includes, but is not limited to, women and non-binary individuals, people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities and veterans. The next cohort is currently slated to start in late October 2019 at our San Francisco HQ. Please note that this apprenticeship requires you to be present and onsite in the SF office Monday through Friday. Relocation assistance will not be provided at this time.

 Who?

 Twilio is looking for an apprentice able to do the following:

  • Write high-quality, maintainable code that is well-documented and extensively tested
  • Collaborate with team to rapidly and safely iterate and deploy production systems
  • Participate in product and architecture reviews to determine project deliverables
  • Commit to, scope out and timebox tickets to deliver at a predictable cadence
  • Contribute to regular team meetings to plan work on an ongoing basis
  • Give and receive constructive feedback as part of peer code reviews

Requirements

  • Technical proficiency via a coding bootcamp, online certification or equivalent
  • Proficiency in at least one server-side language and web framework
  • Experience with web applications, REST APIs and databases
  • Willingness to learn Java, Scala, PHP, JS and/or Python
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Test driven development discipline

  • Familiarity with the Scrum development framework
  • A public GitHub portfolio of software projects or equivalent

What?

For the first part of the apprenticeship, you will be part of a team of apprentices learning about Twilio's engineering platform, working on internal tools and building your Twilio app to help you get up to speed on our products, systems and processes. You will spend the rest of the program interning on one of our product engineering teams, learning about software development best practices from subject-matter experts and iterating on your team’s software systems. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will have access to formal training and multiple mentors to help you navigate your career path and develop your technical and interpersonal skills.
