IQM Quantum Computers
IQM Quantum Computers

Software Engineer, QPU Numerics

TLDR

Develop QPU simulation software and maintain the open-source KQCircuits project, CI/CD, test framework, and simulation interfaces.

At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.

Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.

The work

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join IQM Numerics team. The key aspect for this role is to work with IQM simulation software tools and develop simulation software further, while actively contributing to planning, critical decisions and peer reviews (code and designs). In this role you will also work closely with Design and Simulations as well as Modeling and Dynamics -teams; initiating and collaborating on requirements setting for simulation interfaces and data compatibility.

Part of this role is also to collaborate with the external open-source community: follow or respond to community questions and issues, participate in relevant events, e.g. conferences and hackathons, EU projects events and other relevant software as an open-source project.

What you’ll actually do

  • Software development of the QPU simulation software stack and support the simulations of quantum processing units (QPUs)

  • Development and maintenance of IQM simulation software tools, including the open-source KQCircuits project and inhouse software

  • Maintain the development environment, such as CI/CD and the test framework

  • Support team members with software development

  • Organize and participate in daily/weekly meetings coordinating the backlogs and teamwork

  • Coordinate an issue-based collaborative workflow within the team

  • Participate as software engineer in meetings with other teams/projects when needed

  • Interface with internal teams on data workflow and the open-source community and external stakeholders

What we’re looking for

  • 3+ years of experience with clear responsibilities in Software Engineering or Software Development

  • Strong Python skills

  • Experience in Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)

  • Some understanding or willingness to learn more about quantum physics, QPU simulations and electro-magnetics

  • Capacity to solve problems and learn continuously independently or collaboratively with other team members while supporting positive team culture

  • Attention to detail, striving to deliver high quality workflows and improve the simulation processes and tools with each iteration

  • Support for an open team culture, where each member assumes shared responsibility, gives and welcomes constructive feedback to improve quality, and responsiveness to problems by solving them together without blame

  • Experience regarding Artificial Intelligence, Optimization, High Performance Computing languages, such as Fortran or C is seen as a benefit

Why IQM?

  • Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.

  • High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.

  • Never the smartest: You won’t always be the smartest person in the room. Neither will we. Expect to learn constantly - from each other and beyond with IQM’s Learning Hub, LinkedIn Learning, and a team-based L&D budget.

  • Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!

  • The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.

  • Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.

The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.

We'll start interviews and move forward with hiring as soon as we meet strong candidates. Please submit your application soon.
