Chief People Officer
About the Kapor Center:
The Kapor Center is a family of three distinct organizations working under a shared mission. (SMASH: a 501c(3) public charity which operates STEM education programs, Kapor Capital: a seed-stage investment fund, and Kapor Foundation: a 501c(3) private operating foundation). The Kapor Center aims to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in the technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem through increasing access to tech and STEM education programs, conducting research on access and opportunity in computing, investing in community organizations and gap-closing social ventures, building diverse and inclusive companies, and increasing access to capital among diverse entrepreneurs. The three organizations are supported by a robust operations team, which provides finance, accounting, human resources, people operations, IT, events, legal, and other operational support. The Chief People Officer will play a pivotal leadership role in the staffing, people management, learning, and culture-building across organizations.
Position Overview:
The Chief People Officer (CPO) provides organizational leadership, across the Kapor entities (SMASH, KEI, Kapor Capital and the Foundation), on human resources policies and practices and building a diverse, inclusive and high impact organizational culture. In addition to these people-related responsibilities, the position manages the facilities, office services and reception functions. The CPO serves on the Kapor Center Senior Council as well as on the Leadership Team, bringing perspective and leadership on organizational culture across the organizations. The CPO will build and manage a small People Operations team. The Director of Facilities/Office Services is also a direct report.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Organizational Health and Culture
- As a key member of leadership of the Kapor Center, facilitate efforts to define desired workplace culture and develop policies, practices and strategies for cultivating a healthy and productive work environment.
- Develop and implement workplace practices that reflect Kapor Center values and ensure fair treatment of all employees.
- Develop and maintain a program of employee events, gatherings, and communications that cultivate healthy culture, productivity, impact, and high levels of employee satisfaction and engagement.
- Regularly assess staff and management feedback on workplace culture and satisfaction. Develop strategies to address areas for improvement.
- Develop a People Operations team that is experienced by staff as accessible, fair and honest in dealing with workplace issues.
Staffing and Staff Development
- Provide strategic and logistical support to hiring managers throughout the hiring process, including helping managers develop job descriptions, recruiting qualified and diverse candidates, supporting the interview process, conducting compensation surveys, and preparing offer letters.
- Establish the highest quality orientation, on-boarding and off-boarding practices.
- Design mentoring/coaching/professional development programs for staff to help them achieve their professional and personal goals.
- Oversee the development and implementation of organizational learning across organizations, supporting staff in professional growth and development, and ensuring staff understand relevant trends in order to advance strategic priorities. Ensure activities for learning and professional development are strategic, and aligned to broader organizational needs.
- Provide resources to managers (training, coaching, etc.) to enhance supervision and leadership skills that promote workplace fairness, employee development and organizational effectiveness.
- Identify and manage external employment agencies, recruiters, and temporary staffing agencies.
- Establish meaningful and impactful performance management/feedback systems that promote honest and productive dialogue between managers and those they supervise as well as among all staff.
- Provide counsel and resources to managers and staff to address workplace conflict and staff underperformance. When necessary, guide managers through performance improvement and disciplinary actions.
- Promote values and practices that result in a diverse and inclusive workforce, including procedures for assuring diverse applicant pools and trainings on thriving in a diverse workplace.
Compensation, Benefits, Policies and Procedures
- Align the Kapor Center’s internal policies, practices and systems with its mission and values
- Develop and review Kapor Center policies and procedures, ensuring they are up-to-date, organized and readily available to all staff
- Develop and update Kapor Center compensation and benefit programs, ensuring they are competitive and fair and effective in recruiting and retaining top performing employees.Assess and as necessary redesign of current performance management and compensation processes, creating a culture of high performance and impact, while also providing career development pathways/opportunities for all staff and managers aligned with professional growth goals
- Advise management on people operations matters, consulting expert or legal counsel as required.
- Maintain current knowledge and understanding of state and federal employment law, industry trends, and best practices regarding people management
- Oversee programs that ensure employee safety, welfare, and wellness
- Analyze effectiveness of all people operations efforts
Facilities and Operations Management
- Assure that management and operation of facilities at 2148 Broadway provide a productive, safe and well-maintained environment for staff and visitors
- Develop and manage building operating systems for facilities including security, maintenance, janitorial and engineering
- Maintain organization of building systems documentation and procedures that support business continuity in the event of emergencies, urgent maintenance and staff turnover
- Assure consistent staffing and/or on-call availability by staff in the event of urgent building issues or emergencies.
- Supervise the Facilities and Office Services Director
Requirements
Qualifications & Skills:
- A minimum of ten (10) years experience working with People and Operations functions, including a minimum of five (5) in a management capacity.
- Experience developing best practices across People Operations functions including hiring, benefits administration, training and organizational development.
- Strong project management skills.
- Safely lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly in the course of a day
