On Deck
Recruiting Partner, OD50 Fellowship
TL;DR: Fast-growing early-stage startup seeks combination recruiter-builder for our new job-seeker fellowship, responsible for mentoring participants and helping run the fellowship. On Deck already helps world-class startup founders, angel investors, and independent writers start or grow their next thing — now we also help those looking for roles at startups. Details below!
About On Deck
On Deck's mission is to increase the amount of economic growth generated by startups and creators, by systematically removing the bottlenecks to starting up.
We are building a modern educational institution: a platform serving the many strands of identity of ambitious people who want to change the world.
We started with the On Deck Founder Fellowship (ODF), an intensive 10-week program that helps talented, ambitious people gain the network and skills needed to build the next generation of great technology companies.
Now, we’ve launched the On Deck First 50 Fellowship (OD50). Modeled after ODF, OD50 will help groups of job-seekers find amazing new roles as employee #1-50 at top startups, and connect them with a lifelong community of peers. OD50 fellows are high-skill individuals ready to take an intentional next step in their careers.
Role Overview
On Deck Recruiting Partners will help run the First 50 Fellowship and serve as mentors and advisors to the fellows in each cohort.
Roughly 60% of your time will be spent coaching individual fellows on both their long-term career goals as well as tactical advice (such as interview prep and compensation negotiation). This is also a huge perk of being a Recruiting Partner—you get paid to help super-talented people navigate their career journeys and get jobs at high-growth, impactful companies! Your advice will likely take several forms:
1) Asynchronous engagement and feedback
2) Individual office hours with fellows
3) Leading small group workshops
Then 20% of your time will be spent attracting amazing First 50 fellows, including sourcing, engaging, and exciting our cohort.
The remaining 20% of your time will be spent helping organize the Fellowship overall: identifying and coordinating with prominent outside speakers, engaging with fellows in our community Slack, etc.
The ideal candidate for this role has direct experience with the recruitment process—either in Talent / HR or as a hiring manager—and is excited to spend a significant portion of their time coaching individuals toward their next roles.
On Deck is a scrappy startup, so you’ll have lots of autonomy over your work. You should have an optimistic, can-do personality. Additionally, as the first Recruiting Partner, you’ll be able to influence how the On Deck First 50 Fellowship is structured overall.
You'll work in close partnership with Anthony who leads the First 50 fellowship and engage on a ~daily basis with other amazing teammates like our Head of Talent, Jenny, and our Head of Experience, Trish.
Why you might be excited about us:
- We’re tackling a big problem with even bigger potential. Participants in our existing Fellowships say great things about us.
- You care deeply about helping people find jobs and want to leverage your experience as a hiring manager, coach and/or recruiter in a hands-on way. You also get particularly excited when your advice guides someone through a major career transition point.
- You’ll be able to work remotely and (mostly) set your own schedule. On Deck was a remote-first team even before Covid, so we know what makes for a great remote environment.
- You'll have a lot of flexibility in your role, and will be able to help define what the Recruiting Partner job looks like going forward.
- We're backed by a who’s who of the biggest names in the venture investing world, including Village Global, Marc Andreessen, Keith Rabois, Chris Dixon, Balaji Srinivasan, Bloomberg Beta, and so many more. (Read more about our fundraise and 50-year vision here.)
Why you might *not* be excited about us:
- We're small (~45 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, this role isn’t for you. You'll help create our company's culture.
- We're an early-stage startup, and on top of that, this is the very first cohort of the First 50 Fellowship—so it’s like a startup within a startup. Projects and priorities are likely to shift.
- You should be comfortable with just a dash of chaos. This is not the kind of job where you show up and we tell you exactly what to do every day.
Compensation
This role comes with a competitive salary, stock options plus employee benefits including generous healthcare.
Hiring Timeline
We would like this person to start in late December or early January in advance of a mid-January kickoff date for our first OD50 cohort. This role has the flexibility to be one full-time person or multiple part-time Recruiting Partners (each 15+ hours per week).
Location
Our team works remotely, but you will have to be available to work on U.S.-friendly hours, which may be difficult from Europe or Asia.
On Deck is the first place the best talent looks when thinking about starting or joining a startup.
